Misconceptions and Fabrications of The McGrath Family

The McGrath family — Margaret, Catherine, Anne, and James — of Freshwater has contributed to the propagation of the misconception that there was a signed document called the Atlantic Charter. They also distorted a date relating to the Atlantic Meeting when they repeatedly stated — both verbally and in writing — “We moved to Freshwater from Argentia on August 18, 1941, the very day that the Atlantic Charter was signed in Argentia.”

As stated in various other areas of this section of Argentia.org, there is no such document as the Atlantic Charter. Also, the Atlantic Meeting was conducted in Argentia outer harbour — the mouth of Ship Harbour — and not in Argentia inner harbour, between August 9 and 12. By August 18, President Roosevelt was in the United States and Prime Minister Churchill was on his way back to England, having stopped at Reykjavik, Iceland for an official visit after leaving Argentia. The participants of the Atlantic Meeting left the Argentia area on August 12.
